I found this amazing book, wood-engraving and woodcuts by clare leighton, at an estate sale many years ago. I picked it up again the other day and was blown away by the incredible examples of black and white prints used to describe the various techniques used and aesthetic qualities of wood cut printing. Like this incredible example above, by the artist gertrude hermes. Breathtaking!
The book is a part of the "how to do it" series from London: the studio ltd., and was published in 1932. Though out of print I did find a source here and here for anyone who might want this incredible study in the creation and appreciation of wood cut prints.
Inspired by the wonderful blog acejet 170, I've also scanned a few of my favorite plates and posted them in a new flickr set called vintage books. Now I just have to add some more examples to make it a worthy set. Yipee! Another great reason to go to estate sales!
