I do love a good estate sale. Unfortunately, they've become harder to find. Not estate sales in general. Good ones. Ones that are put on by the family or a friendly estate sale person vs. the big, grumpy, professional companies. Most sales are heavily attended now, and undoubtedly you have to take a number and wait to get in. Which I don't mind doing, but more and more it seems that when you do finally get in, it's already been stripped of anything special. I imagine that everything's already photographed and posted on ebay before the first number's been called. I could be wrong, but that's what it feels like...ok, sorry. Rant done.
Well last weekend, I stumbled across a REAL estate sale in my neighborhood. One put on by the family of the home owner. By the time we rolled in, it had been open for a while and was pretty picked over, but still there were some treasures to be found. Down in the basement we found this amazing little, carved wooden bird, made by a carver from Tennessee in 1977. We also found this small Haeger vase, simple, modern and in perfect condition. Both were ridiculously cheap which was cool, but what was most fun was to find these sweet things, buried down in a basement, passed up by everyone before us. They're now home with us, cherished again and displayed in places of honor. Yes, I do love a good estate sale!

I agree, good estate sales are hard to find. I try to have the attitude that other people won't be looking for the same things I am and hope for the best.If you live in the Seattle area email me and I will share my best thrift store secret with you. By the way, I think you are really terrific.
