the glass flowers of harvard.
You know I love a good botanical. I love them drawn. I love them photographed. I love them pressed. And yes, I love them made from glass too, which is what this amazing flower is created with by the victorian glassmakers, leopold and rudolf blaschka. This very rare and delicate botanical model is part of the glass flowers of harvard collection, and is on loan through this fall to the corning museum of glass. "The exhibition celebrates the singular triumph of glassmakers Leopold Blaschka (1822-1895) and his son Rudolf (1857-1939); provides insight into the intellectual appetite of the late Victorians, through the lens of botany as an academic discipline; and offers close-ups of the people and the craft process behind the Glass Flowers." Also included in the exhibit are many beautiful botanical drawings created by rudolf blaschka as studies for the glass models. I don't think I'll be in corning, new york any time soon, but if I had half a chance, I'd love to see this show.
