I discovered the beach landscape paintings of wolfgang bloch yesterday in my travels. From a distance it's pretty obvious that the paintings are scenes of the beach but almost equally as compelling is the "rothko-esque" feeling of a study of color. If it wasn't for a turn of white to indicate a wave, this beautiful work could easily play as an exploration of abstracted fields of color and texture. With closer inspection still, I discovered another layer of complexity and depth in his work when I realized that the "canvas" he had used was a mix of wood panels and cardboard. All in all, the result was art that was moody, rich and very compelling. And powerfully lovely too!
I really like these 2 pieces. Thanks for the introduction to his work.
