video weekend: beatriz milhazes, suburban, lion heart.

This is one of the best video's I've seen about art. It doesn't hurt that it's featuring one of my favorite artists today, beatriz milhazes. But what's so lovely in this particular video is the fact that she shares some of the process' she uses to make her art as well as explaining her love of paint and collage and color. I felt like I walked away from this video with a deeper insight and understanding into this exceptional artists work, as well as some universal truths about art in general. I totally loved it!

I was reading through the moments that mattered article from last weeks nytimes magazine yesterday and checked out this video below after reading starlee kine's review. Lion heart seems to have been viewed by over 17 million people but for some reason I missed it, so I admit I'm late to the party. Regardless, it's very sweet and moving (yes, tears were streaming down my face when I saw it the first time. Ok, the second time too), speaking about kindness, connection and love in it's purest form. The version below is extra sentimental because of the whitney houston sound track so if you want to see one without the croon that also tells a little bit more of the story, go here.

I'm really liking the organic, seed pod like nature of these ceramic pieces by ana hillar. There's a very primal and mysterious quality about them that draws me in. And of course, the fact that they're so beautifully crafted doesn't hurt either.

I love flickr. Look at these amazing images of goldfish I found yesterday! The top beauty is by hisatomi tadahiko and the gorgeous one below is by s!va m1h0. Yikes they're good.

natalie chanin.

 

As a estate saler from way back, I'm dazzled by the brilliance of alabama chanin's resurrection of less than perfect quilts. I can't tell you how many beautifully crafted, past their prime quilts I've lingered over, in love with their beauty but not sure what to do with them in such disrepair. Leave it to the smart and ever talented natalie chanin to come up with this amazing solution. By adding embroidery, patching and even stenciling over the original quilt, their narrative gets richer and more precious in the process. I love that so!

diem chau.

 

These lovely mixed media ceramic pieces by diem chau are perfect for the mood of this day. Comforting, symbolic and celebratory of the magic of "home", they leave me happy and content. Here's to a wonderful day!

 

lyman kipp.

 

I'm loving the bold simplicity of these pieces by lyman kipp. The ink drawing above and painting below are both studies for sculptures, but I like them as graphic work the most. Shape and form, positive and negative spaces are all being explored here with results that are simply gorgeous.

beatriz milhazes.

 

There are artists that you just can't get enough of and beatriz milhazes is one of them for me. Her work never ceases to move and delight me. Joyful, intelligent, energetic and always surprising, for me it truly doesn't get any better than this. It's nice to remind myself of this, to indulge in a favorite artist over and over again! Loveliness abounds!

tsilli pines.

I love these simple, graphic, embroidered collages by tsilli pines so very much. Red and black on cream. Dots, lines, grids and patterns. And with names like bottom line, balloon payment and budgeting, could they be anymore appropriate given the present economic climate? A series of 3 or 5 or 10 would be fabulous, simply framed in black, one long line of them, or maybe in a cluster. Yep, that'd be perfect too.

diana brennan.

 

The natural history series of photographs by diana brennan, found yesterday at lost at e minor, is absolutely remarkable. I love their muted color palettes and the formal poses of the birds themselves. Are they real or not? There's a nostalgic, almost tempered feel about the works regardless. Oh, such lovely, moody art indeed!

sarah young.

 

There are so many wonderful pieces to choose from by sarah young. I settled this morning on her lovely relief prints. Simple color palettes and gorgeous compositions, it's hard to pick which two to feature in this post. What an accomplished artist and craft person it takes to make such a wide range of beautiful, captivating work.
