A kind reader brought the stunning work of ellary eddy to my attention the other day. Gorgeously crafted, these oil paintings of polar bears in water are compelling on so many levels. I'm immediately struck with a number of questions. Where are they, in a zoo or perhaps somewhere in the melting arctic? Are they playing or in distress? Are they safe or in danger? And regardless of the story line, the pieces themselves shift the idea of horizon and gravity, somewhat disorienting to the eye in all their undeniable beauty and surprise. Seeing these large creatures floating, rolling, swimming is a stunning thing to witness. Wondering about the deeper story adds yet another compelling layer. Such amazing work!
