I love these etching and aquatint prints from pamela dimauro. Their line work and the soft burnished feel are so indicative of this wonderful medium. The drawing skill it takes to create such beautiful depictions of flowers and plant forms is remarkable, especially using traditional printmaking techniques. And the warm, rich color palettes are as lovely as the already beautiful compositions. I love, love, love these.

These screen prints from tory franklin are wonderful on many levels. The layered patterning and amazing color palettes are what immediately catch my eye. And then the stories, the motifs that seem to be part of a much larger narrative start to tug at the imagination. Aren't they just magical?

Look at these amazing prints by dennis ichiyama. I totally love the use of lettering, layered and stacked to create abstract geometric forms that hint at words but are unintelligible if in fact they are words. And don't get me started on the color. So beautiful, so rich. I think these prints are just remarkable.

I love these quiet prints from hanna konola. There's a gentle eye at work here, capturing the world in a very personal way. The colors and softness of hand in these pieces result in a warmth that is very comforting. Lovely work indeed.

Ah-h-h, I'm trying to catch my breath from delight. These lithographs by mark hearld are two of the many of his pieces that make my heart go pitter pat. I'm loving the energy and movement of his work, the scratchy line, the painterly colorations. Plus, his textile designs are also incredible. Oh they're all so very nice!

Aren't these prints by sonia rollo delightful? Ah, etching and dogs combined together, a favorite art medium meets a favorite subject, so I'm bound to start out happy. But of course it's the way the animals are rendered and brought to life with such empathy and insight that's the real story here. Beautifully composed, colored and drawn, they convey the spirit and character of their subjects with such sensitivity. Which just makes me happy.

I'm really liking these prints by andrew douglas underwood. I love the fresh color palette, happy composition and the simplified leaf motifs. Terrific as editioned prints (for sale at the wonderful little paper planes), I'd also love them as big, marimekko-esque textile patterns. Goodness abounds.

I totally love, love, love these intaglio prints from brian aldrich. I'm such a fan of printmaking as a medium and well, I've been pretty clear about my passion for spirographs so it isn't a huge leap to understand why I'm a bit short of breath when I see this amazing work. The colors, the patterns, the hand and texture. Oh be still my beating heart! They are just gorgeous!

sister mary corita kent.

I came across this wonderful post about the artist, sister mary corita kent yesterday at drawn. Wow, what a blast from my past, my forgotten past, to be totally honest. I'm so grateful to be reminded of this amazing woman's work, so influential and iconic to the era in which I was growing up. The exuberant, joyful aesthetic and sentiment of much of her work, belies the strong political voice and outrage of many of her other pieces. Beautiful and blunt, these images were a central part of my visual upbringing. I remember her messages of course, but I realize now after so many years, how influential her color, compositions and powerful aesthetic were to me personally. Bold color, torn edges, blown out type, handwritten type, layering of transparencies to create 3rd colors, off-kilter compositions, high contrast, powerful compositions that work the page. To look at it now is not only comforting in it's nostalgia but also surprising and exciting because it feels familiar and new all at the same time. I'm so excited to bring these powerful and beautiful images back into my life!
