I'm kind of a geek about this kind of thing. I love it when a thing that you live inside of, or take for granted, or just do, is pictured in a way that helps you to see it differently. From a new vantage point, almost scientifically. That's why I love the illustrations of greg colson so much. A day in the life, pictured as a pie chart. Funny and smart.
A great resource for this sort of information design/aesthetic exploration is the blog information aesthetics. I'm always surprised by the diversity and intelligence of much of this design "movement", and this site does a great job featuring a wide range of examples to explore.
Another incredible example of framing up information in a innovative and acccessible way is the work of jonathan harris who co-created the amazing site weel feel fine and phylotaxis, 2 of my most favorite web experiences of all time. I find this stuff amazing and inspiring, plus at the end of the day, I walk away with a different view of the world I thought I knew. Very cool!
